DEVON REX

cats
History
In 1950 a curly coated kitten was born in the normal litter of a farm cat in Cornwall. The hair samples were similar to those of a Rex rabbit. On maturity it was mated back to his mother, producing two of three kittens with Rex coats. This was recognized as a new mutation and a breeding program was established.

In years later in Devon a curly coated kitten was born and mated back to a Cornish coated cat but all kittens had straight coats indicating that a different gene was involved. Both Rex varieties were developed separately and are distinctive breeds.

Description
The Devon Rex has a curly coat and a small to medium size muscular body. The head is comparatively small with huge ears that are very wide at the base and set low on the sides of the head. It has a quizzical elf like expression. The legs are long and slim.

Temperament
The Devon Rex is mischievous, playful and intelligent. Although they love to play they are affectionate and sit cosily in your lap. Because it has less fur than most breeds it feels very warm as you nurse it.

It comes in a variety of colours and a popular sub-variety is know as the Si-Rex because of its similarity to the Siamese coat patterns and colours. However it is mostly prized for its suede like coat and its pixie look.
