Australia's own breed - the cat just made for the great indoors
This carefully crafted breed of delicately spotted cats is tops for temperament, full of love and fun, bright but relaxed. Becoming increasingly popular with first time pedigree cat buyers, Its well bred but not extreme appearance appeals as essentially cat.
The Spotted Mist proudly wears the label 'Made In Australia' and has evolved from combining Burmese, Abyssinian and Australian Domestic shorthair cats. Burmese contributed the loving personality, four of the colours and some spotting as well as body size. From the Abyssinians came the beautiful ticking to develop the spots, two more colours, and a touch of lively Intelligence. Domestic tabbies contributed to the best spots but primarily to vigour, with a dose of "uncossetted" cat genes improving teeth, kidneys and mothering qualities. The Spotted Mist reflects the best of its mixed ancestry as well as its own unique charms. Sound husbandry and selection has led to a pleasingly uniform, but genetically broad-based population of cats 'Which is now recognised Australia wide as a Championship pedigreed cat.
There is nothing extreme about Spotted Mist; they are of moderate size, medium boned, rounded of head, with large eyes and ears. The coat is short but resilient, the tail is plumply furred. The colours are warm brown, blue, chocolate, lilac, gold and peach; the pattern Is of delicate spots against a misty ground, with legs and tall ringed and barred, and the face lined. Eyes are large and expressive in a range of greens. The nose, chin and whisker pads are broad giving the face a generous expression.
Desexed cats, females and kittens fit In easily with all sorts of other cats, being neither aggressive toward them, nor allowing themselves to be upset by the unfriendliness of others. They also make excellent mothers. They make excellent pets for children, even very young ones, as they are tolerant of handling, and disinclined to scratch. As kittens they are lively, but sober up somewhat on maturity. Their propensity to crawl into the nearest lap with or without invitation, and to constantly hang around to see what people are up to makes them excellent companions for home workers and invalids.
Their people-centredness contributes to their willingness to remain indoors between dusk and dawn or to be wholly indoor pets. This is an essential characteristic for Australia where some Governments have placed curfews in order to protect native wildlife. While It is not possible to alter the inherent behaviours which enable the cat to hunt, these characteristics can be redirected towards interacting with people. Selection will continue to enhance these qualities further, creating a truly companionable pet, which quickly becomes a member of the family.
Marbled Mist
Over the past few years kittens have appeared showing a modification of the Classic Tabby pattern. Spotted Mist Breeders decided to call the pattern "marbled' only to discover that in America Bengal Breeders had described a similar pattern In similar terms.
The Marbled Mist does not differ from the Spotted Mist In body and head type, eye colour or their superb temperament. The only differences are that the spots on the side are replaced by symmetrically placed patches of the darkest colour broken with blotches of lighter colour, all of which occur on a pale background and the tail instead of being evenly ringed has beautiful irregular scalloping. They both share "spotted tummies".
The Marbled Mist will eventually appear in all the colours of the Spotted Mist: Blue, Brown, Chocolate, Lilac, Peach and Gold. The showiest colours will be the darker two with the others being more subtle in their expression. |
